ascension – under ether

Eleven years in, three albums down. Ascension certainly caught people’s attention when the first album, Consolamentum, was released some nine years ago Now, some eight years and a few releases later, it’s time to see if the band still “has it”.

Yes, the band still “has it”.

In its essence this is a traditional black metal album. Black metal heavily inspired by the early days of bands like Watain, Ofermod, Craft and Malign, and the influence and atmosphere those bands brought into a scene that was but a shadow of what it used to be.

But, by adding subtle enough old, progressive and, dare I say, avantgarde influences Ascension has created an album that doesn’t just remind you of the good old days.

The rock n’ roll vibe of “Pulsating Nought”. The majestic solo of “Thalassophia”. The Mayhem-ian feeling of “Vela Dare”. Under Ether shows us the potential of black metal in 2018. It is still relevant, and it doesn’t have to shock to impress.

PERSONAL HIGLIGHTS: ECCLESIA, THALASSOPHOBIA.
